UK Season - 2011

The Band Wagon (1931)

Music:Arthur Schwartz
Lyrics & Book:Howard Dietz
Book:George S. Kaufman

Not seen since 1931, Kaufman (A Night At The Opera), Dietz and Schwartz wrote this revue for Fred and Adele Astaire. It has been considered the finest revue in Broadway history with the greatest revue score according to theatre historians. Songs include ‘Dancing In The Dark’, ‘I Love Louisa’, and ‘High And Low’. MGM borrowed a few of the songs for a film they made, with the same title, but none of the sketches.

Coco (1969)

Music:Andre Previn
Book:Alan Jay Lerner

In 1969, Lerner (My Fair Lady) and Previn wrote this ultimate, witty vehicle for Katharine Hepburn (a role later played by Danielle Darrieux and Ginger Rogers) but also for Coco Chanel. Coco is about Chanel’s dilemma, which occurred in her sixties, as she attempted to maintain her worldclass status as a fashion leader while newer, younger designers began to usurp her place. This is the musical’s European premier.

Mexican Hayride (1944)

Music & Lyrics:Cole Porter
Book:Herbert & Dorothy Fields

The Fields (Annie Get Your Gun) with Cole Porter created one of Porter’s biggest successes. Written in 1944, starring Bobby Clark and June Havoc (the original Baby June, whose early life was portrayed in the musical Gypsy). This hilarious, uplifting musical is about an American, Joe (a fifth rate Guys and Dolls-type racketeer) who mistakenly becomes a Mexican hero. The hit song from the show is the beguine, ‘I Love You’. This completely forgotten show has not been seen anywhere since its original, hit run.
